It’s important to know what your treatment options are so you can pick what’s right for you.

Have you ever walked into an appointment feeling completely lost? Your friend told you they went to some other clinic way back when and sat there with a heat pack and a machine for half an hour. That can’t really be all, can it? And if there’s more to physiotherapy than that, what exactly can a Physio do to help you?

If you don’t know what your options are, then you don’t know what you’re missing out on.

Let’s break it down into 4 simple treatment categories. Once you know what they are, you can be more prepared to be in control of your rehabilitation. Not only will you get the most out of your appointment, but it makes for a quicker recovery because you and your therapist work on a tailored program specifically for your injury.

1. Exercise

This is one of the most effective forms of rehabilitation for most injuries backed by scientific evidence. It can include either range of motion exercises, stretching, or strengthening. The thing is, not just any exercise will do; a trained physiotherapist has to complete a thorough assessment in order to then prescribe the appropriate exercises at the right time for optimal healing. Think twice before you accept the cookie-cutter approach from other clinics.

2. Manual Therapy

This is when a physio uses hands-on treatment to optimize healing, whether that’s soft tissue release for tightness or joint mobilization for stiffness after an injury. Manual therapy can also include the use of hand-held devices like Graston for a more targeted approach.

3. Adjunct Therapies

(Laser, TENS Muscle Stimulation, NMES Neuromuscular Electric Stimulation, Ultrasound, K-Tape, Acupuncture)

All of these therapies are called ‘adjunct’ because they are never the ONLY part of a physiotherapy treatment. They are like the add-on items from Amazon: important to have but not the only tool in the toolbox. These therapies can help promote tissue healing, decrease pain, and strengthen by recruiting weak muscles.

4. Cryotherapy and Heat Therapy

Ice and heat are two very important parts of most treatment plans, but at WESTPRO we teach you which is best for your specific injury and let you do it yourself at home. We believe in making the most out of your 1-on-1 time with the therapist.

There you have it!

Of course there can be other treatments that we haven’t listed, but these are the most common ones you’re likely to hear about. At WESTPRO our team will educate you about your injury, what the best treatment will be, and the rehab plan. You always have an active part in your treatment and you always get a choice, because what works for one person may not work exactly the same for you. We respect individuality and that’s why every treatment is tailored to your needs. Still have questions? Give us a call or use the chat box to speak to a therapist today.
